How to quickly fold a pizza box in 4 steps

Here are four simple steps to quickly fold a pizza box, allowing your employees to fold one in 5 seconds:

Flattening and pre-compression fold lines

The pizza box you received is a complete, unused box with all creases and indentations pre-made. You will need to lay the pizza box flat on a table with the printed side down and the cardboard side up.

First, gently fold along all the pre-made perforated lines (fold lines) to facilitate shaping later.

Fold both sides

When a pizza box is laid flat, it’s generally rectangular. The two longest sides are called the sides. Hold the outer edges of each side with both hands and fold them upwards along the fold lines, approximately 90 degrees until they are almost vertical, allowing them to stand upright. Try to align the fold lines as much as possible and avoid twisting the cardboard.

The folds on both sides provide stability, preventing the pizzas from collapsing due to weight or stacking.

Folding pizza box lid

Next, locate the other cover plate attached to the bottom of the box; its area is roughly the same as the bottom. Pinch the narrowest, longest edge of the cover with both hands and fold it inwards along the crease, approximately 90 degrees, creating a small, upright baffle. This is the latch you’ll need next.

Once closed, the pizza won’t fall out of the box during delivery and will remain hot. It also prevents moisture or air from getting in, ensuring your customer receives a piping hot pizza.

Secure pizza box and check its stability

You can check the pizza box from these 4 angles: press the creases → press the four corners → try lifting it → shake it gently.

  1. Press along the crease with your finger again to ensure the crease is clear and the structure is firm.

  2. Press each corner of the pizza box firmly again, especially the four corners and the front edge of the lid, to help the whole box fit together.

  3. Hold the empty pizza box with one hand and check if the sides are opening outwards; ensure it fits tightly. Try loading a pizza into the box and lift it up to check if the bottom is noticeably sagging or deformed.

  4. Hold the pizza box by the bottom with both hands, keeping it level, and gently shake it from side to side to observe whether the pizza box shifts or whether the sides open up.

Additional tips

Cardboard quality: Using high-quality corrugated cardboard is crucial. The thickness and strength of the cardboard directly affect the smoothness of folding and also help maintain the pizza’s heat. We most commonly use 3-ply E-flute corrugated cardboard, which is highly rigid, does not easily soften, and is suitable for pizza delivery. Compared to white cardboard (250~350g), E-flute corrugated cardboard is more oil-resistant, moisture-resistant, and less prone to deformation. Click to see more of our pizza boxes.

Custom printing: Restaurants now have their own brand image, and we recommend flexographic printing. It’s suitable for corrugated cardboard, and even on rough surfaces, it produces good results when combined with our water-based inks. To prevent fading or migration of the printed design, we add an oleophobic coating to each pizza takeout box. Click the cardboard boxes printing guide to study further.

Stacking: When stacking pizza boxes, please have your staff ensure that the lids are facing up and the four corners are aligned. Stack no more than 6 pizza boxes at a time to avoid crushing the pizzas inside.

Speed: To reduce customer wait times, you can plan to pre-fold parts of the pizza box so that it can be sealed once the pizza is made.

A restaurant in Shenzhen successfully improved its work efficiency by training its employees on the correct way to fold pizza boxes, reducing the time from 45 seconds to 20 seconds and increasing packaging speed by 30%. The damage rate also decreased from 15% to 3%, all of which can bring tangible benefits to your restaurant in terms of cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

How to fold different types of pizza boxes?

Different types of pizza boxes (such as standard corrugated cardboard boxes, plastic pizza boxes, and insulated pizza boxes) have different folding methods. For standard corrugated cardboard boxes, simply follow the four steps mentioned above. For other types of pizza boxes, the folding method is slightly different.

  • Plastic pizza box: Reusable and waterproof. You must fold it along the pre-crease lines to avoid bending it and deforming it.

  • Insulated Pizza Box: It has an extra insulated inner liner. Before folding, fold the inner bottom to fit the outer bottom to avoid air bubbles; press it flat from the inside out by hand.

Train your staff to quickly fold pizza boxes

Training employees to fold pizza boxes quickly and accurately is key to improving restaurant efficiency and service quality. Here are some training tips:

  1. Simplified steps: The process of folding a pizza box is simplified into the four steps mentioned above, and employees are helped to quickly master the skills through demonstrations and hands-on practice.

  2. Provide practice: Arrange for employees to practice folding before peak hours to ensure they are proficient in the operation.

  3. Standardized processes: Ensuring every employee uses the same folding method maintains consistency. This not only improves efficiency but also ensures each pizza box is delivered to the customer in optimal condition.

Common problems and solutions when folding pizza boxes

Question 1: What should I do if the box is prone to tearing when folded?

This is caused by the cardboard being too wet, inaccurate folding lines, or excessive force. We recommend using E-flute boxes, folding along the pre-made creases, avoiding excessive force, and ensuring that the cardboard is not damp or damaged.

Question 2: What should I do if the top of the pizza box becomes loose after folding it?

The pizza lid may be loose because the front edge is not fully engaged or the four corners are not properly secured. Press down inwards with your hand for 2-3 seconds; a slight “click” sound indicates that the lid is in place.

Conclusion

Folding pizza boxes is a seemingly simple yet crucial skill in restaurants. It not only maintains pizza quality but also improves operational efficiency and enhances customer service.
